- Later that day, the child's abdomen became severely swollen.
- When Oxendine arrived home from work, Tyree urged him to take the child to the hospital, but Oxendine delayed, instead going out to buy and read a newspaper.
- While en route to the hospital, the child stopped breathing and was pronounced dead upon arrival.
- Medical examiners determined that the death was caused by blunt force trauma and identified two distinct injuries: one inflicted more than 24 hours before death (by Tyree) and a second, nonlethal one inflicted less than 24 hours before death (by Oxendine).
